This completed deck remodel started with tile over plywood which had been leaking. When you start a rot repair job, one has no idea of what you will find. What we found in this million dollar plus house was the worst of workmanship which caused the failure. We started cutting into the stucco around the deck and everywhere we looked, the rot expanded. We found that the original contractor used no flashings between the deck and the walls, the deck and under the doors, and the holes through the deck surface for the handrail caused leakage and therefore, rot. The actual structure was so rotten that the only thing holding up the deck was the stucco. After reframing the rotten walls and flooring, new flashing were installed on all deck to walls and on the outside edges and a new cement based deck coating was installed. It looks like tile, but it is one piece. The new powder coated aluminum rail is attached to the outside face of the deck eliminating deck perforations.
